Tim Montler Awarded National Endowment for the Humanities Funds

LTC professor Tim Montler received a $300,000+ award through the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Documenting Endangered Languages (DEL) stream.

The funds will be used to compile a comprehensive on-line dictionary of Saanich, the only dialect of Northern Straits Salish in Vancouver Island, British Columbia, to have a small group of first-language speakers.

Dr. Montler’s award is part of eighth round of the NEH and the National Science Foundation’s campaign to document languages threatened with extinction. Experts estimate that more than half of the approximately 7,000 currently used human languages are bound for oblivion in this century, and the window of opportunity for high-quality language field documentation, they say, narrows with each passing year.

Congratulations, Dr. Montler.
