Dr. Cukor-Avila has an MA in Spanish from Texas A&M University and a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on approaches to sociolinguistic methods and the study of linguistic variation and change, specifically grammatical change over time in African American English. She is also interested in regional variation in American English and how regional accents play a role in how we judge the people around us — basically linguistics stereotyping and accent discrimination. Before coming to UNT in 1994, she taught Spanish at Texas A&M and The University of Michigan, ESL to adults, and she was also an ESL/Bilingual teacher in Conroe ISD. She feels that she has the ideal research/work situation because she enjoys interacting with people and learning about their lives which is what she is able to do when she is doing fieldwork and when she is in the department advising students.
